CDL Defense Lawyer in Dickinson, North Dakota
For a commercial driver, a ticket is not just a fine. It can be the difference between working and sitting out. Federal rules hold CDL holders to a stricter standard than other drivers, and the consequences follow you whether you were in your truck or your own pickup.
What is at stake for your CDL
DUI: A first conviction means a one-year CDL disqualification, three years if you were hauling hazardous materials. A second conviction can mean a lifetime disqualification. This applies even if you were driving your personal vehicle.
Serious traffic violations: Speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, following too closely and texting while driving a commercial vehicle all count. Two convictions within three years bring a 60-day disqualification. Three bring 120 days.
Fewer options: Federal rules generally do not allow a CDL holder's ticket to be deferred or kept off the record the way it might be for other drivers. A plea that seems harmless can still count.
